Did you know?
Bees pollinate about 1/3 of world crops that provide a direct food source for humans. However, they indirectly help pollinate around 85% of the world’s crops that sustain human life. What does that mean? Well, direct crops are things like fruit and vegetables, nuts and grains. Indirect crops are things that the animals we consume or use products of, need to survive. This basically means that over 85% of the food we eat results from pollination.
There are dozens of species of bees. The honey bee is the principal pollinator amongst all. When we think of bees, some of us think of honey and wax, maybe propolis or royal jelly. Some of us may even just think of their dreaded sting but how many of us really think of their purpose beyond that?
So, STOP! for a moment and reflect on the fact that, without bees, there would be no more fruit and veg, also no more Caesar Salad, Lasagne, Pizza or Sunday roast … and so much more!
The bee population has declined at an alarming rate over the past decade or so. This has prompted a significant number of bee types to be put on the endangered species list.
Bees need our help urgently!
